School Lunch Program | Supporting our friends at Safari Series in Kenya

Wander Africa is happy to support our friends at Safari Series and to help fund their School Lunch program. The program feeds 544 children daily across two schools in Kenya - Makurian and Kipungani.

Providing healthy, nutritious, and hot school meals is about far more than food. For a child, a proper meal means concentration, energy, and the ability to engage in lessons. It means fewer distractions from hunger and a far better chance of learning, growing, and thriving.

At Makurian Primary School, a simple meal can make the difference between a full classroom and an empty one. On the days when lunch is provided, attendance triples. More than 350 children come through the school gates, ready to learn - and to eat.

For many, that school lunch is the only meal of the day, and almost always the only hot one. When the cooking pots are full, lessons are focused, energy levels are high, and the atmosphere around the school feels alive. When the programme pauses, attendance drops sharply, and teachers see the immediate impact on concentration and participation.

Kipungani Primary School presents particular logistical challenges, as food in and around the island is both expensive and limited. To make the programme viable, supplies were sourced from Malindi and transported by truck, then loaded onto a dhow - a traditional Swahili sailing boat - before finally being delivered by donkey to the school kitchens. A long and complex journey, all to ensure children receive a warm, nourishing meal at school.

It is a reminder that meaningful work is rarely easy. But when the outcome is children who are fed, focused, and able to learn, every step of the journey is worth it.
