Optional Post Safari Excursions

Depends on availability

The options beyond this safari are quite honestly limitless. Depending on your budget, and how long you want to go for we can help you add whatever you want after. Since May/June is the best time to travel anywhere within Africa, and you want to go beyond Kenya this is a good time to do so. I have included some ideas below, that I can elaborate on individually. For each of the options below I recommend at least 3 nights.

Some examples:

Amboseli National Park at the Tortilis Camp (The foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro), known for a high density of elephants with the backdrop of Mt. Kili. A gorgeous camp located within its own 8,000 acre concession limited vehicles from the main park.

Also around Amboseli are the Chyulu Hills, with some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. While here you can stay at the ultra luxe Ol Donyo Lodge, or Campi Ya Kanzi.

Samburu National Park and surrounding, a beautiful and arid National Park that is different from the rest due to its arid and dry climate. The wildlife here has also adapted to this type of terrain. There are a few options here: Samburu Saruni, Saruni Rhino and Sasaab.

Beaches: Lamu at Manda Bay, Zanzibar, Watamu, Pemba Island at the Manta Resort - these are all fantastic places to get the real African beach experience, with white sandy beaches, clear warm waters of the Indian Ocean and rich Swahili culture. *It is wet season, so please consider this if debating this option.

Optional Things To Do While on Safari

Balloon Safari in Masai Mara: $450 per person, includes a 3 hour balloon ride across the plains of the Masai Mara at sunrise, with a fully catered continental champagne breakfast upon landing.

Upgrade Nairobi Hotel: Approx. $250 per person/night at the Hemingways Hotel Nairobi

General Information

Vaccinations

No vaccinations are required/mandatory, however, we recommend the following:

Malaria Pills - highly recommended

The CDC and WHO will state that you require a whole list of vaccinations, however, please take this with a grain of salt. They have those guidelines for those who are going to be staying in the country for an extended period of time, are going to be “roughing it” or are in the country for humanitarian work in high disease areas.

During our safari we are not going to be exposed to the elements, and will be spending minimal time in Nairobi and straight on to safari.

Visas

Visas are available on arrival if you have a US passport for $50 each, or you can apply online here

Gratuities

This can be confusing, but we will simplify it the best way we can for you. Please note, this is just a general guide based on the industry norm, you are free to tip more if you wish.

Driver/Guide: $10 per person/day

General Staff: $10 per person/day for the entire staff put in the general tipping box.

Currency

The Kenyan Shilling to USD is about 100 Kenyan Shillings to a USD. All camps and hotels will accept USD. If paying any hotel or camp tabs, you can pay via credit card. In most cases, you can even leave the general staff tip on a credit card. However, we recommend tips to be paid in cash.

Weather

The end of May to late June is considered “rainy season” in Kenya. The rains are typically short, and this time of year is one of the most desirable to go. The rains bring new life to the wilderness, the rivers start to flow again, and everything starts becoming green again. As an added bonus we can have some muddy roads which is always fun when on a game drive :)

I can’t guarantee there will be rain, as sometimes we won’t even see a drop during those months. So, when packing please keep this in mind.

Temperatures will range from low 60s at night to 70s and low 80s during the day. We will keep an eye on the trends as the time nears.

Packing/Clothing

I can walk you each through this personally, however, as a general rule: Pack light, pack little, and pack layers. Since temperatures can vary day by day, and hour by hour, it is important to have clothing you can layer and be comfortable in. During the early morning game drives it can get as low as low 60s or high 50s, but as soon as the sun rises temperatures can shoot up to the 80s. Bring closed shoes for the evenings (mosquitoes can be a pain!) Our packing guide is a great guideline.

Since we are going to be including some activities during this safari, comfortable shoes are a must, especially for the guided walks. We usually follow the trails created by the wildlife, but sometimes we have to go off the beaten path. Sneakers will work, as long as the soles can withstand some pointy twigs or thorns. Waterproof or water resistant shoes would be a bonus for you.

We are going in small planes, and luggage is limited to 30lbs per person, including personal items. Please pack in a soft sided duffel bag, or a wheeled duffel, as long as it is soft sided and compact. We have examples on our packing guide.

Food and Drinks

Food at all the places we are staying is included. This means breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food will be different every day! Your dietary preferences will be filled out in the Guest Profile Forms and we will accommodate them. Kosher meals are subject to extra charges, as the meat will have to be imported from South Africa.

Drinks are included only at Ol Pejeta Cottages.

Accommodations in Nairobi are on Bed and Breakfast basis.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is HIGHLY recommended. Based on my research via several companies the price range for the insurance for the duration of the trip is between $130 to $200 per person. This covers the medical, accidental death (YIKES), and emergency evacuation as well as trip cancellation, baggage loss, etc. Read the terms carefully and go with a reputable company. Below are some companies I can recommend, however, I do not have personal experience with any of them.

  1. Insuremytrip.com - this is a great resource that shows multiple quotes from various travel insurance companies.

  2. https://www.worldnomads.com/usa/ - Great option for basic coverage, however, when I compared their rates to others they came out only slightly less expensive, but with less coverage.

  3. www.bhtp.com - Berkshire Hathaway, a trusted name and reasonable prices with great coverage within different plans.

  4. https://www.travelguard.com/buy/default - They have three plans, and of all the sites this one breaks down the differences between them the best.

Brandi and I never used to get travel insurance when we traveled, but the last two times things happened beyond our control which ended up costing us thousands of dollars out of pocket in flight delays, extra hotels, lost baggage, and missing several days on safari during our honeymoon. That being said, it completely changed our opinion on the important of travel insurance.

Other Things to Note

This is a safari designed with fun and togetherness in mind. You will be staying in luxurious, comfortable properties that offer a lot of fun activities. These properties are not however, the most high end luxury properties available (as the price suggests). They are authentically Kenyan, rustic boutique properties with a pro conservation and community focus.

The hotel in Nairobi is a 3.5 star boutique property. I picked this hotel as a way to reduce the overall price of the safari. We would only be here overnight and leave first thing the next morning, an upgrade is available if you prefer to do so.

Meet and Greet

Since all of you are likely from all over the country or even all over the world, we will create a private Facebook Group for communication and introductions.
