The Uganda Experience

Gorillas | Chimpanzees | Wildlife | Culture

Hosted by Jay + Brandi

Coming up close and personal with the majestic Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat is considered to be one of the most exclusive wildlife encounters in Africa! Come join us on this adventure to meet the gorillas in their element, as well as chimpanzees and the abundant wildlife that Uganda offers!

Our adventure begins in Entebbe, a town on the peninsula of Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria, where we will rest up for the night in Entebbe’s most luxurious hotel, Hotel No. 5.

The next morning we set off for an early flight to Kidepo National Park to have the ultimate Ugandan safari experience! While in Kidepo we have the entire 560 square miles to ourselves, taking over its only lodge - Apoka. For three nights, we get to explore this untouched land, its abundance of wildlife, and the endangered local mountain tribe that calls it home.

The chimps are calling, so it’s time to fly to Kibale National Park! One of few places to see habituated chimpanzees in the wild anywhere in the world. We spend two nights at Primate Lodge, with a two to three hour trek in search of the chimps in their natural habitat. We also have an authentic Ugandan lunch at a local homestead in Kibale.

Finally, the highlight of this entire trip - The Gorilla Trek! We take a six hour drive through Uganda’s country side to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, staying at one of its most exclusive property’s - Sanctuary’s Gorilla Forest Camp for two nights. After resting up for the night, we set out on foot to search for the mountain gorillas through the rainforest. The trek can take up to 7 hours depending where the particular gorilla family we are trekking is located - their positions change throughout the day. Read more about the gorilla trek experience below.

On the final morning, we fly back to Entebbe and prepare for our departure back to the US.

  • The gorilla trek can take up to 7 hours through varied terrain. It is a rainforest so there are chances of rain and mud. The length of the trek depends on the location of the particular gorilla family we are following.

    • Seeing the gorillas is not guaranteed, but there is a 90% chance of seeing them.

    • We get about 1 hour with the gorillas once found.

    • A gorilla encounter can be as close as them coming to touch you.

    • Gorilla permits are $600 per person per trek. One trek is included into the cost of the trip.

    • A max of 8 people per gorilla family is allowed. So, we are likely going to split up into two groups, trekking with other guests.

  • The chimpanzee trek can take between 2 and 3 hours, and can also be strenuous. Since they are in the wild, you will be on foot in search of them and not guaranteed.
