The Race Car of the Animal Kingdom
Where to see them
Cheetahs are mostly found in sub-Saharan Africa and in eastern and southern African parks. Some cheetahs can still be found in southern Algeria, northern Niger and Iran. They like dry, open grasslands where they can pick up speed to kill prey.
Cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world reaching speeds up to 112km/hr in just 3 seconds, these fierce felines hunt during the day to avoid competition from other powerful predators such as lions, hyenas and leopards, they use their exceptional eyesight to find their prey and when the time is right they sprint from cover knock down their victim and kill it with a bite to the throat.
How to help
Sadly, this beautiful animal is threatened by loss of habitat and prey, as well as human wildlife conflict. The cheetah has been listed as “vulnerable” by the IUCN Red List and, today, an estimated 9,000-12,000 remain in Africa
